Preparation:
Essentials tools
Before ironing a shirt make sure you have the essential tools required to iron a dress shirt. You will need a good quality iron with a temperature control system, an iron board, a spray bottle filled with water, and of course the shirt you need to press.
Always read the label
Always make sure about the instructions given on the label of shirts, as different shirts require different temperatures to press so it is very important to read all basic instructions to avoid any mishandling.
Ready your iron station:
Set up your iron board and select a neat and clean surface to avoid any stain. Plug in your iron and maintain the temperature as needed by your shirt as mentioned on the label.
Damp the shirt is an optional process, slightly damping will give your shirt a smooth and wrinkle-free look
Ironing techniques
Collar:
Start with the collar when ironing a formal shirt or dress shirt, as they are the most noticeable part of a shirt. Place the collar on a flat ironing board. Always start ironing the back of the collar
Smoothly move the iron across each area, focusing on the edge and moving inwards and outwards, then flip it over to repeat the process on the front side.
Cuffs:
Unbutton the cuffs, ironing them first on the inside of the cuff with an edge of iron as we do for the collar, move inward and outward then flip the collar and repeat for the front side, avoiding ironing on the button it may leave a stain on your shirt.
Yoke and shoulders:
Place the shirt on the ironing board in such a way that the shoulder seams align with the edges. Iron the yoke and shoulders carefully, maintaining a smooth and even surface.
Sleeves:
Start ironing the sleeves from the upper part and work your way down ending towards the cuffs. Pay extra attention to creases and folds, preventing a crease along the sleeves by positioning it a few millimeters over the edge of the ironing board.
Body of the shirt:
Place the shirt flat on the ironing board, first iron the back side of the shirt from top to bottom, then both front sides on the shirt in the same way from top to bottom, avoid touching iron on the buttons to avoid any stain.
.
Final touch and inspection:
After ironing the entire dress shirt, hang it on a hanger immediately so the press remains set. This will help to prevent wrinkles from reappearing. Once the shirt is completely cool check if it needs any final touches or if there are any wrinkles remaining so give a final touch
